VA Illiana Health Care System Reaching Out to Rural Veterans by Expanding Access to Care Through Tele-Health Services

This is an exciting time for VA Illiana Health Care System (VAIHCS) as they embark on new and innovative methods for expanding access to Veterans needing specialty service consultation.  VAIHCS is pleased to offer Tele-health services to Veterans in central Illinois and west central Indiana.  Several Tele-Medicine clinics exist for initial and follow up specialty services. These clinics are designed for Veterans to see a provider at a distance in another location. Veterans can now see specialists remotely using technologically advanced equipment from their primary provider's office. Tele-Medicine/Tele-health/Rural health is all synonymous and use real time videoconferencing to bring services to Veterans in the community. These services offer:

  • Providing more services to Veterans in rural areas
  • Access to care more accessible with less driving time
  • Enhanced access to specialist services using real-time video conferencing;
  • Quick turnaround time for initiation of treatment plan in most cases;
  • Active participation and collaboration between providers in local and distant sites.

The Office of Tele-health Services through Veterans Health Services is offering clinical services through use of real time interactive videoconferencing, which is a synchronous modality of care. Peripheral-based carts are used for a variety of services to be offered. These peripherals include a stethoscope, camera, otoscope, and dermatology camera.

VAIHCS offers Tele-Medicine encounters between the Danville specialties and the Peoria, Mattoon, West Lafayette, Springfield and Decatur outpatient clinics. These services are expected to expand where possible. Services vary by location and VAIHCS is continuously striving to define their Tele-health/Rural Health initiatives based on specialty needs in each clinic and taking into consideration Veteran feedback.

VAIHCS has tele-presenters in each clinic location available to coordinate the Veteran's clinical experience in Tele-Medicine. Here are a few select services offered in Danville and their outpatient clinic locations:
